Multimodal and Generative Media

How AI systems read and produce more than text: images in and out, speech recognition and synthesis for voice agents, and generated video and audio with the provenance tools that label it.

4 lessonsabout 40 min

Language models are no longer limited to text. The same products now read photos, scanned documents and screenshots, draw images from a description, listen to speech and talk back, and generate short video clips and music. Each of these turns a new kind of data into tokens or vectors that a model can work with, and each brings its own costs and failure modes.

You will start with vision-language models in practice: what they read well, how images are resized and billed, how to prompt with them and how to check what they extract. Then you will see how diffusion models generate and edit images, how speech recognition and text-to-speech combine into voice agents that must answer within a fraction of a second, and finally what video and audio generation can do today, what it costs, and how watermarking and content credentials mark media as AI-made.

Lessons

  1. AI-12.01 Vision-language models in practice Vision-language models can describe images, read text in photos and documents, interpret charts and answer questions about screenshots. Intermediate 10 min
  2. AI-12.02 Image generation Text-to-image models, mostly based on diffusion, generate images from text descriptions. Intermediate 10 min
  3. AI-12.03 Speech: ASR and TTS Automatic speech recognition turns audio into text, and text-to-speech turns text into natural-sounding audio. Intermediate 10 min
  4. AI-12.04 Video and audio generation overview Generative models can now produce video, music and sound effects from text or images. Advanced 8 min
