AI Safety, Security and Governance

How AI systems fail and how teams contain the damage: hallucinations, prompt injection, guardrails, privacy, bias, alignment research and the rules that now govern AI.

7 lessonsabout 70 min

A model that works in a demo can still state false facts with confidence, follow instructions hidden in a web page, leak personal data into logs or treat some groups of users worse than others. None of these failures is solved by a better prompt alone. They are handled the way engineers handle other risks: by understanding the mechanism, measuring how often it happens and putting several layers of defence around the model.

You will start with hallucinations: why models confabulate and how grounding, citations and abstention reduce it. Then you will see why prompt injection is so hard to stop once an agent mixes private data, untrusted content and a way to send data out, and how guardrails, privacy controls and bias evaluations work in production. The module ends with the bigger picture: what alignment and interpretability research is trying to do, and how risk-based regulation such as the EU AI Act, model cards and audits shape what you are allowed to ship.

Lessons

  1. AI-13.01 Hallucinations Language models generate plausible text, not verified truth, so they sometimes state false information confidently. Beginner 10 min
  2. AI-13.02 Prompt injection and data exfiltration Prompt injection hides instructions in content a model reads, such as a web page or email, that try to override its real instructions. Intermediate 14 min
  3. AI-13.03 Guardrails Guardrails are checks around a model: input filters that block disallowed requests, output filters that catch unsafe or policy-violating content, classifiers for sensitive topics, and validation of structured outputs and tool calls. Intermediate 10 min
  4. AI-13.04 Privacy and PII handling AI systems often handle personal data. Intermediate 8 min
  5. AI-13.05 Bias and fairness in LLMs Models learn biases present in their training data and can treat groups unequally or reinforce stereotypes. Intermediate 8 min
  6. AI-13.06 Alignment and interpretability, the big picture Alignment is the problem of making AI systems pursue the goals we actually intend, not just the literal objective we specified; specification gaming shows how systems exploit loopholes. Advanced 12 min
  7. AI-13.07 AI regulation and governance Governments are regulating AI, often with risk-based approaches where high-risk uses face stricter requirements for transparency, testing and human oversight, as in the EU AI Act. Beginner 8 min
