Tools and Agents
How a model goes from writing text to taking actions: tool calls, the agent loop, workflow patterns, MCP, memory, multi-agent systems and the engineering that makes agents reliable.
A language model on its own can only produce text. Give it tools, such as a search function, a database query or a code runner, and it can look things up and change things in the world. The model never runs anything itself: it proposes a call, your code checks and executes it, and the result goes back into the conversation.
You will start with that single exchange, function calling, then put it in a loop to get an agent that reasons, acts and observes until a task is done. You will compare fixed workflows with autonomous agents and learn the common patterns, connect tools through the Model Context Protocol, give agents short-term and long-term memory, and see when several agents beat one. The module ends with coding and computer-use agents and the practical work of making agents reliable: tool design, retries, checkpoints, guardrails and evaluating whole trajectories.
Lessons
- AI-09.01 Function calling and tool use Function calling lets a model use tools. Beginner 12 min
- AI-09.02 The agent loop (ReAct) An agent is a model running in a loop: it reasons about the goal, chooses an action such as a tool call, observes the result and repeats until it decides it is done. Intermediate 12 min
- AI-09.03 Workflows vs agents: the patterns Many useful systems are workflows with fixed steps rather than fully autonomous agents. Intermediate 16 min
- AI-09.04 Model Context Protocol (MCP) The Model Context Protocol is an open standard for connecting AI applications to tools and data. Intermediate 14 min
- AI-09.05 Memory for agents Models do not remember between calls, so agents need memory. Intermediate 10 min
- AI-09.06 Multi-agent systems Multi-agent systems split work between several model instances with different roles or contexts, such as an orchestrator that plans and sub-agents that research in parallel. Advanced 12 min
- AI-09.07 Coding agents and computer-use agents Coding agents read code, make edits, run tests and iterate, and computer-use agents operate browsers or desktop apps by reading the screen and clicking and typing. Advanced 12 min
- AI-09.08 Making agents reliable Reliable agents start with well-designed tools: clear names, narrow purposes, simple parameters and helpful error messages. Advanced 12 min
