Hugging Face, Hands On
A hands-on tour of Hugging Face for beginners: quick wins first, then how to read a model page, what a model needs to run, the ways to run it, and how to share your own app.
Hugging Face is where most open models, datasets and demo apps live, and it is the fastest way to go from "I read about this model" to "it is running on my machine". This module starts with the fun part: in the first lesson you try a live app, chat with a small model in your terminal, and run three-line Python programs that label text, recognise images and transcribe speech, before any theory.
Then it teaches the skills that make you independent. You learn to read a model page the way an engineer does (who made it, what it does, what license it carries, which file to download and which file not to trust), to work out whether a model fits your laptop before you download gigabytes, and to choose between the four ways to run a model: a hosted API, a local app, Python, or the browser. The last two lessons cover accounts, tokens, the download cache and datasets, and end with you building and sharing your own Space. Every command and code sample in this module was run for real, and the outputs shown are the ones it produced.
Lessons
- AI-16.01 Hugging Face in ten minutes: the cool stuff first Hugging Face is the main hub for open models: Git repositories of models, datasets and demo apps (Spaces), plus libraries that load them. Beginner 12 min
- AI-16.02 How to read a model page A model page is the repo's model card (README.md with YAML metadata) plus what the Hub reads from its files. Beginner 14 min
- AI-16.03 Can I run it? What a model needs To know whether a model will run, multiply its parameters by the bytes each weight takes: 4 for float32, 2 for float16 or bfloat16, about 1 for 8-bit and about 0.5 for 4-bit. Beginner 14 min
- AI-16.04 Four ways to run a model There are four common ways to run a Hub model, and the main difference is whose hardware does the work. Intermediate 15 min
- AI-16.05 Accounts, tokens, downloads and datasets You can download public models and datasets from the Hugging Face Hub without an account, but an account and an access token unlock gated models, private repos, uploads and Spaces. Beginner 12 min
- AI-16.06 Build and share your first Space A Space is a Git repository on the Hub that runs an app: Gradio, Docker or static HTML. Intermediate 15 min
